SUMMARY:So you want to be a librarian? [TG1/LIS]
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in becoming an information professional or l
 ibrarian? We will look at the advantage of getting qualified but also expl
 ore whether it’s “worth it”. During this two hour online workshop\, 
 you will get a chance to ask questions of recently qualified professionals
  and current LIS students. This event is aimed predominantly at those work
 ing in libraries who are interested in gaining formal qualifications.\n\nP

 pleted my Masters in Librarianship at Sheffield University in 1992 I had m
 y first professional role at King’s College London before moving on to a
  subject librarian role at St George’s University of London in 1996 and 
 I am still there!  St George’s has been a fantastically flexible employ
 er and after some great development opportunities I am now the Associate D
 irector of Information Services (Library) and have a team of 20 FTE in our
  highly specialised library.  Over the years I have taken on a variety of
  roles in our sector – member of chartership board\, chair of the Health
  &amp\; Social Care Strategy Group\, member of M25 steering group\, member
  and chair of University of London Federal Libraries group – to name a f
 ew.  Within my institution my role has taken me outside the library and I
  have had the opportunity to work with colleagues on our Athena Swan steer
 ing group and heading up the professional services stream\, managing our A
 symptomatic Test Centre during Covid\, training as a mentor and coach to s
 upport colleagues involved in the Aurora leadership programme and more wid
 ely across the institution.\n\nClare Williams is an Information Assistant 
 at the University of Wolverhampton. She holds a BA (Hons) in English and s
 tarted working in Derby’s public library service as a student\, before m
 oving in to academic libraries where she has worked since 2016. She has re
 cently started the MA Library and Information Services Management at the U
 niversity of Sheffield\, with the aim of career progression.\n\nRachel Bre
 tt is Science Reference Team Leader at the British Library. She holds a BA
  (Hons) in Art History and started working as a Library Assistant at the B
 ritish Library when she was studying for her MA in Philosophy. Rachel has 
 worked with the Manuscripts and Archives and the Humanities Collections. I
 n 2018 she completed Chartership and took a temporary role in a Public Lib
 rary to expand her knowledge of the library sector.\n\nPanel\n\nAlice Sieg
 wart is a Library Support Adviser at Anglia Ruskin University. She holds a
  BA (Hons) in Educations Studies and started a career in libraries in 2018
 . Alice had previously applied to a Library and Information Services Postg
 raduate course but decided not to pursue it. Instead\, she has done severa
 l online courses\, such as Introductions to Metadata and Digital Preservat
 ion and Copyright for Librarians\, to increase her knowledge and skills.\n
 \nMadeleine Ahern:  I completed my MLIS degree at UCL this past summer an
 d am now a postgrad at the University of Toronto studying Medieval Art and
  manuscripts as well as the History of the Book. I hope to pursue a career
  in special collections and/or art librarianship.\n\nTom Mason is currentl
 y completing his MSc in Information Science at City University and is due 
 to submit his dissertation on the 7 January.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nList of LIS pro
