SUMMARY:Introduction to Managing Budgets [Event Ref. No. TG4/MB]
DESCRIPTION:In view of the current national and global economic situation\,
  there can be no doubting the importance of effective budget management. I
 n order to achieve this\, a fundamental understanding of the processes and
  implications involved is vital. The 'Introduction to Managing Budgets' co
 urse is aimed at those managers or senior supervisors who are new to budge
 t management or who would like a better understanding of the processes inv
 olved.\n\nThe course will include a briefing on finance in HE today - with
  specific emphasis on how recent economic changes and the recent CSR are l
 ikely to impact on us over the next few years.\n\nThe remainder of the ses
 sion will concentrate on an introduction to basic elements of budget manag
 ement such as:\n\nWhat is meant by many of the financial terms used?\nThe 
 importance of commitments\nThe value of costings\nHow to understand the im
 plications of budget decisions\n\nThere will be a few brief hands-on exerc
 ises to help re-enforce some of the ideas discussed during the session.\n\
 nThis session is very much an introduction to managing budgets and will no
 t provide a detailed explanation or guidance to the processes although the
 re will be opportunity for questions and discussions to identify ways forw
 ard for those who are interested.\n\nThe course will be run by Sally Faith
 \, Head of Library Administration at the University of Sussex. After 18 ye
 ars service in investment banking Sally 'saw the light' and moved into hig
 her education 7 years ago. Responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the
  £4 million annual budget at Sussex\, Sally has worked with her colleague
 s to implement budget management procedures that have resulted in successf
 ul delivery of budgets within 0.5% for the last few years.\n\nVenue: Room
