DESCRIPTION:This course will be run by Sally Faith\, Head of Library Admini
 stration at the University of Sussex. After 18 years service in investment
  banking Sally 'saw the light' and moved into higher education 7 years ago
 . Responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the £4 million annual budge
 t at Sussex\, Sally has worked with her colleagues to implement budget man
 agement procedures that have resulted in successful delivery of budgets wi
 thin 0.5% for the last few years.\n\nThe Managing Budgets course is aimed 
 at those managers or senior supervisors who are new to budget management o
 r who would like a better understanding of the processes involved.\n\nThe 
 course will include a 1/2 hour briefing on finance in HE today - with spec
 ific emphasis on how recent economic changes and the National Budget are l
 ikely to impact on us over the next few years.\n\nBuilding on the annual L
 ibrary Finance Lecture that Sally delivers to Library and Archive students
  at University College London\, the remainder of the session will concentr
 ate on an introduction to basic elements of budget management such as:\nwh
 at is meant by many of the financial terms used?\nthe importance of commit
 ments\nthe value of costings\n\nThere will be a few brief hands-on exercis
 es to help re-enforce some of the ideas discussed during the session.\n\nT
 his session is very much an introduction to managing budgets and will not 
 provide a detailed explanation or guidance to the processes although there
  will be opportunity for questions and discussions to identify ways forwar
