SUMMARY:Managing Student Behaviour [TG4/MSB] - Please note this event has b

The 21st century university library is regarded as a ‘safe place’ and
space to ‘feel at home’ for many students. Alongside traditional resou
rces\, the library may replicate the comfort of a modern entertainment hub
with cafés\, big screen areas and comfy seating\; but what behaviour is
acceptable can be unclear in these varied environments. Frontline staff ar
e also faced with increased demands from students paying a high cost for e
ducation.\n\nWe will examine approaches to managing student behaviour supp
ortively and collaboratively\, while maintaining an appropriate environmen
t for learning and teaching support.\n\nThis workshop is ideal for front-l
ine library staff\, library supervisors and student services staff. Attend
ees will have a chance to network and share best practice with peers and p
rofessionals.\n\nThe day will be led by Ash Charlton\, Director of Ace Tra
ining\, who has been working with academic libraries for over 20 years.\n\
nThe morning session will cover the changing pressures on the student popu
lation\, and recommend effective strategies for setting boundaries and cha
llenging difficult behaviour.  These include practical recommendations fo
r layout and signage\, as well as skills in creating a conflict-free setti
ng.\n\nIn the afternoon we go into more detail about different types of co
nflict\, agreeing standards of positive language use\, raising awareness o
f cultural issues that may affect communication\, and making recommendatio
ns for challenging unacceptable behaviour.\n\nAt all times the emphasis wi
ll be on positive outcomes: promoting the well-being of staff while creati
ng a stress- and conflict- free environment for students.\n\nWatch Ash Cha
