SUMMARY:Practical Equal Opps for Library Managers - Life after the Equality

DESCRIPTION:Have you ever worried that you might not fully understand Equal
  Opportunities and that you might slip up in a pressure situation like an 
 interview?  \n\nHow would you deal with a complaint of bullying or harassm
 ent? Have you kept up to date with the changes introduced in the 2010 Equa
 lity Act? \n\nIf any of the above questions raise some concerns in your mi
 nd\, put them to rest by attending a practical and interactive workshop on
  equal opportunities and the 2010 Equality Act given by a solicitor with e
 xperience in HE and who is a full-time practitioner in employment law. Phi
 lip Lott has a lively and engaging style and is able to make the law seem 
 both interesting and fun.\n  \nThe workshop will address issues such as:\n
 \nMorning Session:\n\n* Who is now legally protected under ‘equal opport
 unities’ legislation?\n\n* What significant changes have been introduced
  by the 2010 Equality Act? \n\n* The difference between direct and indirec
 t discrimination\n\n* How do we avoid suggestions of discrimination in job
  advertisements? \n\n* Avoiding pitfalls in questions at interviews \n\n* 
 The rights of part-time staff\n\n* Requests for ‘flexible working’/ret
 urning part-time after maternity leave\n\n* Rights to ‘time-off’ to de
 al with child-care/domestic emergencies. \n\nAfternoon Session:\n\n* What 
 ‘beliefs’ are protected under ‘religion and belief’ legislation?\n
 \n* Who now qualifies as ‘disabled’ - and what particular rights do th
 ey have? \n\n* How do ‘equal pay’ rights work?\n\n* Dealing with compl
 aints of harassment and/or bullying\n\n* What are the new rules as to hara
 ssment of University staff? by ‘third parties’\n\n* How do the new ‘
 Public Sector Equality Duties’ affect Universities?\n\n* Changes in the 
 rules on the termination/non-renewal of fixed-term \ncontracts\n\n* Compul
 sory retirements and age discrimination. \n\nA concise outline of the law 
 on all of the topics covered (and the ‘answer’ to each of the case stu
 dies) will be provided.\n\nBy the end of the workshop participants will:\n
 \n* Have gained a practical understanding of the legal principles which go
 vern equal opportunities in the workplace\; and \n\n* Be able to identify

 knowledge gained from the case studies\, an easily-accessible overview of 
 all the main provisions of equal opportunities legislation\, including sex
 \, race\, sexual orientation\, religion/belief and age discrimination.\n

 p B\nTo ease us into the afternoon\, we will discuss further practical cas
 e studies on issues such as: \no	Disability discrimination in practice\no	
 Harassment at work\no	Equal pay claims\no	Religious discrimination\no	The

 ctical guide to the law (and practice) as to discrimination on grounds of 
 disability.\n\n3.45 pm	The Equality Act 2010\nTo conclude - and consolidat
 e - our examination of equal opportunities\, we will put the Equality Act 
 in its context\, considering what has changed (and what hasn’t) with the
  introduction of this new legislation.  \n\n4:15 pm        Summary and Que
