SUMMARY:The Road Less Travelled: alternative approaches to library staff de
velopment and accreditation [Event Ref. No. TG1/RLT]
DESCRIPTION:Twitter – #cpd25_RLT\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAcademic library staff tr
aining and development typically encompasses internal courses\, LIS qualif
ications and CILIP chartership\, events held by organisations like cpd25\,
and the wealth of conferences and meetings that our profession so excels
at putting on. However\, some library staff choose a different path\, opti
ng to achieve qualifications or experience in areas which are\, strictly s
peaking\, outside of what we might narrowly think of as ‘for librarians
’. Others are prepared to look abroad for the chance to gain greater exp
erience and insight.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAt this event\, we will hear from four
speakers who have done just this. Elizabeth Charles\, Assistant Director a
t Birkbeck College\, is a certified member of the Association for Learning
Technology (CMALT)\, a peer-based professional accreditation scheme aimed
at people whose work involves online learning. Sarah Wolfenden\, a Subjec
t Librarian at Brunel University\,  has a Preparing to Teach in the Lifel
ong Learning Sector (PTTLS) award\, a City and Guilds qualification often
held by teachers involved in adult learning. Marina Burroughs\, from the U
niversity of East London\, is Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Aca
demy (AFHEA)\, a certification held by a number of librarians but not usua
lly library assistants without an LIS qualification\, as Marina is. Paul A
llchin\, a Reference Specialist at the British Library\, recently enjoyed
an internship at the Austrian National Library in Vienna\, and experienced
a style of training he describes as more akin to an apprenticeship.\n\n&n
bsp\;\n\nAs this list suggests\, the theme of the afternoon is also about
taking responsibility for our own development\, something the four speaker
s have clearly done. As our profession diversifies and develops\, many mor
e of us will consider alternative approaches and this event is therefore a
chance to hear from people who have already made that leap. The seminar w
ill hear from each speaker\; they will describe the process they went thro
ugh and also reflect on how it has helped them in their current role\, and
how it might benefit them in future ones\, too. While it may be of partic
ular interest to library staff who are involved with programming staff tra
ining\, we hope it will appeal to any librarians interested in developing
their own career. The four presentations will be preceded by a lunch and f
ollowed by an informal discussion session\, allowing delegates to come tog
 ether and share ideas.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nProgramme: \n\n13.00-14.0
