SUMMARY:ASPECTS 1: So you want to be a librarian? [TG1/Librarian]
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of the cpd25 Aspects programme\, aimed at
library staff looking to acquire additional skills and knowledge or staff
working towards Chartership.\n\nAre you interested in becoming an informa
tion professional or librarian? We will look at the advantage of getting q
ualified but also explore whether it’s “worth it”. During this two h
our online workshop\, you will get a chance to ask questions of recently q
ualified professionals and current LIS students. This event is aimed predo
minantly at those working in libraries who are interested in gaining forma
 l qualifications.\n\n\nProgramme:\n\n2pm Welcome and introduction\n\n2.05
'My journey into Librarianship' - Naoise Standing\, Kingston and Richmond
NHS Foundation Trust\n\n2.20 'Balancing Act: My Experience of Studying Par
 t-Time and Working Part-Time' – Ellen Woolf\, Anglia Ruskin University\n
\n2.35 'You can do a degree in libraries? – Applying for and studying a
postgraduate Librarianship degree' – Nikki Beckett\, Nottingham Trent Un
iversity\n\n2.50 Break\n\n3.05 'Choosing the right Information Studies MA
programme and giving yourself the best chance of getting your first librar
ian job'– Francesca Ezzelino\, University College London (UCL)\n\n3.20 Q
  &amp\; A Panel Discussion\n\n4pm End\n\nSpeakers:\n\nNaoise Standing is a
Clinical Outreach Librarian for Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trus
t\, but she has also previously worked in public libraries and academic li
braries. She recently graduated from the Masters programme in Library and
Information Studies at University College London\, where she was awarded a
Pass with Distinction. In 2023\, Naoise was named a member of the CILIP 1
25 List\, commemorating library and information professionals who are expe
cted to lead the sector into the next information age.\n\nEllen Woolf\, Li
brary Manager A.G. Leventis Library at Cambridge Conservation Initiative a
nd Library Services Adviser at Anglia Ruskin University:\n\nWhen she gradu
ated with a BA in English Literature in 2016\, Ellen had no idea what she
wanted to do next. What followed was several years of retail\, marketing\,
and optical work. Inspired by the highly-trained and well-connected optic
ians she was working with in that final role (you can know people professi
onally that you don’t actually work with?)\, she realised that she wante
d a profession and not just a job. After a bit of soul-searching and weigh
ing up of existing skills and interests\, she landed eventually on librari
anship as the career to pursue (with “funeral director” as a close sec
ond place – for reasons that are not so different\, such as a desire to
help people and wanting a quiet place to work). Starting out as a Graduate
Trainee in 2021/22\, Ellen is a new library professional in her third and
final year of an MA in Library &amp\; Information Studies. Alongside this
\, she works part-time in two different libraries: a university library\,
and a wildlife conservation library. She has still never actually seen a d
eceased person\, so is quite confident she made the right choice.\n\nNikki
Beckett\, User Experience Team Leader/Health and Wellbeing Coordinator at
Nottingham Trent University:\n\n\n\n\n“You can do a degree in libraries
? I didn’t know you could do that!” – this is something I hear from
people very often and it never ceases to surprise me how knowledge and inf
ormation courses seem to be fairly unknown to those who aren’t in the sa
me sector/industry\, so why not talk about how you get to that point? In t
his presentation I’ll be speaking about:\n\n· Applying for a librarians
hip degree.\n\n· Choosing a university and type of study.\n\n· Studying
during the pandemic and the transition to on-campus study.\n\n· The modul
es\, course content\, dissertation topics and extra-curricular activities.
\n\n· Support and experience as a disabled student.\n\n· Completing the
course\, pros and cons and what I gained from the experience.\n\n· Post-g
raduation life and next steps.\n\n\n\n\n\nFrancesca Ezzelino is Subject Li
aison Librarian at the IOE\, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society. In
her role she’s responsible for liaising with academic departments\, mana
ging a distinct collection made of print and electronic resources and prov
iding information literacy support through group sessions and one-to-one a
ppointments. She is also the CPD Champion for her library\, running a prog
ramme of staff development sessions throughout the year\, and works as a m
entor within UCL. Additionally\, along with her team\, she provides shadow
ing opportunities to colleagues and is involved in a variety of UCL-wide w
orking groups.\n\nPrior to this role\, Francesca worked as Official Public
ations Librarian\, Library Assistant and Senior Library Assistant in Acqui
sitions and Customer Service Advisor at UCL and in other academic librarie
 s.\n\n\nCost\n£10.00 members\n£20.00 non-members\n\nInformation for join
ing:\n\n This session is virtual and will run via Zoom. Once your booking
has been confirmed\, joining instructions will be emailed the day before
the event.\n Electronic CPD attendance certificates can be provided on re
quest. Please request via cpd25@london.ac.uk\n\nCancellations less than on
e week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the eve
nt of a ‘no-show’ on the day\, the full fee will be charged.\n\nTo boo
k a place please use our online booking form. Please remember to include y
