SUMMARY:Technology Giveth and the Law Taketh Away (or makes extremely diffi
cult): Copyright & Licensing Session [Event Ref. No. TG2/COPY]
DESCRIPTION:Libraries and information centres eagerly embrace new and innov
ative technologies\, increasingly using them to provide information\, teac
hing and learning resources to students\, whether they are studying on or
off campus\, in the UK\, overseas or with our collaborative partners. Howe
ver\, the law and licensing bodies have been slow to adapt to technologica
l advancement resulting in confusion and a search for potentially expensiv
e solutions.\n\nKate Vasili (Copyright Officer) will introduce the session
\, and provide an insight into how she is adapting the support she provide
s at Middlesex University\, so she can continue to assist students and aca
demic staff with their copyright needs. \n\nSue Hurley (Electronic Resourc
es Manager) will elaborate on Middlesex University’s ongoing work to cla
rify the issue of who is entitled to access the electronic resources that
MDX buys\, both domestically and overseas. \n\nIn doing so\, Sue will loo
k at the following questions: \n•	Who is a “valid” user? \n•	Are a
ll students on collaborative programmes entitled to access electronic reso
urces? If not can we provide access at an extra cost? \n•	Who pays\, and
how might this feed into future collaborative agreements? \n•	Does havi
ng one or more overseas campus affect pricing and or licensing terms?\n\nW
e are privileged to have Professor Charles Oppenheim providing expert advi
ce on identifying\, avoiding and managing risks in Web 2.0 applications. T
 hese include Blogs\, wikis\, YouTube\, podcasts\, Slideshare\, Flickr\, Co
nnotea\, Facebook\, Second Life and Twitter which present various potentia
l legal problems. \n\nThe most common issues arising are:\nData protection
  and privacy\, defamation\, copyright\, database right\, moral rights\, pe
rformers rights\, pornography and other illegal materials\, accessibility\
, conflicting international laws\, liability of the hosting organisation.\
