SUMMARY:The Role of Libraries in Supporting Access to Higher Education for 
 Refugees and Asylum Seekers[TG2/Access]
DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;\n\n*REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS NOW CLOSED*\n\nThis
  event will provide information and good practice guidance on how librarie
 s can support students and members of their local community who are refuge
 es\, asylum seekers\, or 'new arrivals' (people who cross borders to reach
  a country).\n\nThe session will begin with a presentation from John Vince
 nt\, outlining the wider context and reasons for migration\, the barriers 
 new arrivals face in getting to and into the UK\, and some of the potentia
 l barriers refugee students face accessing education and using libraries.\
 n\nThis talk will be followed by librarians from Cardiff\, Lancaster\, Cum
 bria and Reading universities describing initiatives at their universities
  and how the library is involved in supporting new arrivals.\n\nThere will
  be time for general discussion and questions at the end.\n\nAttendees wil
 l also receive a document with further guidance at the end of the session.

 nSpeakers:\n\nJohn Vincent has worked in the public sector since the 1960s
 \, primarily for Hertfordshire\, Lambeth and Enfield public library servic
 es. In 1997\, he was invited to become part of the team that produced the 
 UK’s first review of public libraries and social exclusion (from which T
 he Network\, which he now coordinates\, originated). \n\nJohn runs course
 s and lectures\, writes\, produces regular newsletters and ebulletins\, an
 d lobbies for greater awareness of the role that libraries\, archives\, mu
 seums\, and the cultural &amp\; heritage sector play in contributing to so
 cial justice. \n\nHe is particularly interested in supporting the work th
 at libraries do with young people in care\, with LGBTQ+ people\, and with 
 people seeking sanctuary and other ‘new arrivals’ to the UK.  \n\nJo
 hn is also currently the Chair of the CILIP Benevolent Fund. \n\nIn Oct 2
 021\, City of Sanctuary published a second edition of his guide\, Librarie
 s of Sanctuary resource pack\; and\, in Nov 2022\, Facet Publishing publis
 hed Libraries and sanctuary: supporting refugees and other new arrivals. H
 e is currently about to complete another book for Facet Publishing\, this 
 time on libraries’ responses to young people in care. \n\nIn 2014\, Joh
 n was given a CILIP CDEG Special Diversity Award\, and\, in September 2014
 \, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of CILIP. \n\nSara Huws is a her
 itage and engagement professional based in Cardiff. She specialises in cre
 ating memorable and enjoyable opportunities for people to participate in c
 ulture. Most recently\, she has been working with people experiencing home
 lessness to develop their skills as walking guides\, developing women’s 
 history tours and creating courses building confidence and archive skills 
 with a variety of audiences outside academia. Her day-to-day work involves
  maintaining long-term\, meaningful partnerships between Cardiff Universit
 y Libraries and Archives and its neighbours.\n\nAn experienced social entr
 epreneur\, she is co-founder of East End Women’s Museum – the first wo
 men’s history museum in England and Wales – and Every Body Outdoors\, 
 which champions size inclusion in the outdoor sector and creates opportuni
 ties for participation for plus size people. She is currently Co-Chair for
  the Welsh Government’s Culture Strategy Group and is reading for a PhD 
 in ‘everyday activism’ in museum collections. In her spare time she is
  a competitive powerlifter.\n\nBob Frost - Faculty Librarian for Science &
 amp\; Technology (&amp\; Partner Institutions) – Lancaster University. I
  have worked in HE Libraries for the last 20 years in a variety of roles: 
 stock management\, document delivery\, digitisation\, archives\, procureme
 nt\, cataloguing\, team management\, subject liaison and community engagem
 ent.\n\nI currently support staff/students in the Faculty of Science &amp\
 ; Technology at Lancaster and also support our partner institutions. In ad
 dition I lead on our library support for the local refugee/asylum seeker c
 ommunity.\n\nJames Stephens – Head of Library Services and University Li
 brarian – University of Cumbria. I am the Head of Library Services and U
 niversity Librarian at the University of Cumbria with over twenty-one year
 s of experience in academic librarianship\, management\, and leadership. I
  am motivated by enabling access to scholarly information and empowering s
 tudents to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in acade
 mic and work-based contexts.\n\nNatasha Kennedy has been the Library Exper
 ience and Engagement Manager at the University of Reading since September 
 2023 and is responsible for the delivery\, management and development of a
  high quality\, responsive and customer-focused library service that meets
  the needs of all its users\, both within the University community and the
  local community.\n\nIn her previous role\, Natasha was the Reader Service
 s Librarian of the Bodleian Library\, University of Oxford\, where she had
  oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Library\, taught on the Bod
 leian Libraries Graduate Library Trainee scheme\, supported the teaching a
 nd learning needs of staff and students of the MSc in Digital Scholarship\
 , and acted as a mentor for students interested in a career in Librariansh
 ip and Information Management.\n\nNatasha embeds UX (user experience) meth
 ods and approaches in the design of library services to better improve the
  library experience for all users\, and is always keen to collaborate to e
 nsure user needs are met.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nInformation for joining:\n\n 	This
