  on the 12th April 2022\n\nMost libraries have a supervisor role\, but man
 aging staff day-to-day without being their line manager is a tricky busine
 ss. How do you delegate\, share knowledge and skills and correct errors wh
 en it can seem like you have no real authority?\n\nThis 3-hour session cla
 rifies the role &amp\; responsibilities of the supervisor\, giving clear g
 uidelines for the basic functions of supervising staff\, as well as tips f
 or delegating\, upskilling\, giving feedback and dealing with challenges t
 o your role.\n\nWe aim to have a fun\, participatory session\, based aroun
 d real concerns and situations brought up on the course.\n\nProgramme:\n\n
 Role and Delegation:\n\n 	Intros: supervisor problems\n 	Talk: your source
  of authority\n 	Chat: checklist of supervisor role\n 	Talk: the delegatio
 n cycle\n 	Group work: actions at each stage\n\nAfter listing common super
 visor problems\, there is a short presentation on the support supervisors 
 can use when supervising staff. We go on to discuss a checklist of supervi
 sor roles and style (empowering\, encouraging\, overseeing etc) which lead
 s naturally into a discussion of the delegation cycle from setting a task 
 to performance review. Each stage of this is analysed in breakout groups t
 o come up with a good practice guide for delegation.\n\nFeedback\, Trainin
 g &amp\; Challenges:\n\n 	Group work: Bad news exercise\n 	Chat: how to gi
 ve feedback\n 	Exercise: training skills\n 	Debrief: training and upskilli
 ng\n 	Chat: challenges to your role\n\nComing back from the break\, we go 
 into a fun ‘how NOT to give feedback’ exercise\, which leads into a di
 scussion on corrective feedback which can be empowering and productive We 
 then look at training/coaching via a demonstration exercise by the trainer
  which is debriefed for good upskilling skills. Finally we look at ways in
  which staff can challenge the supervisor role\, and how to deal with thes
 e positively.\n\nAbout the trainer: \n\nAsh Charlton has delivered very su
 ccessful and enjoyable HR and diversity-related courses and facilitated se
 ssions for over 20 years. He has extensive experience with local authoriti
 es\, universities and charities as well as international NGOs and the UN.
