SUMMARY:Visit to Lambeth Palace Library [Event Ref. No. TG4V/LPL]
DESCRIPTION:Lambeth Palace Library is the historic library and record offic
 e of the Archbishops of Canterbury and the principal repository of the doc
 umentary history of the Church of England. Its collections have been freel
 y available for research since 1610. The records held here date from the 9
 th century to the present day\, and their broad scope reflects the office 
 of Archbishop as head of the Province of Canterbury\, his national and int
 ernational roles in leading the Church of England and the Anglican Communi
 on worldwide\, and the wealth and power of Archbishops in past centuries w
 hich enabled them to collect books and manuscripts of the highest quality 
 and significance.\n\nJames I described the Library as ‘a monument of fam
 e’ in his kingdom. Peter the Great\, who visited in 1698\, is recorded a
 s saying that nothing in England astonished him as much as Lambeth Palace 
 Library\; he had never thought there were so many books in all the world.\
 n\nIn 1996 Lambeth Palace Library took into its care all the early collect
 ions of Sion College\, the historic library of the City of London clergy\,
  which comprise manuscripts\, pre-1850 printed books\, and pamphlets. Its 
 collection complements that of Lambeth with a key focus on the Church\, bu
 t a rich diversity of other subject material.\n\nThis visit will be compri
 sed of a talk and a tour of the Library and a small display. There may be 
 an opportunity to view some of the public areas of the Palace. This visit 
 will be of interest to archivists and library and information professional
 s who work who work with or who are interested in historical collections.\
 n\nTea and coffee will be provided as part of the visit.\n\nThis visit is
