Applying To Study Library And Information Science … And Beyond: A One-Day Conference [Event Ref. No. TG1/APPLIS]

Are you interested in qualifying as a professional librarian? This event brings together a range of speakers to inspire you to choose a career in the library and information world. We’ll give you an insight into the process of applying for and experiences of Library School, as well as look at your first steps in your career.

It’s a great networking opportunity with peers and other new professionals, and there will be plenty of opportunities to get answers to your burning questions about the whole process. It will be of particular interest to Graduate Trainees and anyone else who would like to become a librarian or information professional.

10.30 Registration

11:00 Welcome and keynote address: Máire Lanigan, Director of Information Services and Libraries, City University.

11:30 Vanda Broughton, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL), and Programme Director for the MA in Library and Information Studies Programme. Vanda will speak about the process of applying and what to expect.

12:20 Sarah Ison, Assistant Information Adviser, University of Brighton, will speak about getting involved with the profession through CILIP and other organisations.

13:00 Lunch

After lunch, two recently qualified professionals will talk about their experiences after qualification, including getting their first professional posts:

14:00 Jo Harcus (Assistant Librarian, St Catherine’s College)

14:20 Penelope Swan (Librarian, The Grey Coat Hospital)

14:40 A panel of current Library School students will take your questions about their experiences applying for and at Library School (covering different universities and modes of study).

The panellists are Ka-Ming Pang (Full Time, University of Brighton), Helen Murphy (Distance Learner, University of Aberystwyth), Samantha Tator (Full Time, City University London) and Linsey Chrisman (Distance Learner, University of Aberystwyth).

15:15 Tea Break

15:30 A final feedback session will sum up the event and speakers and students will take further questions and discussion.

Cancellations less than one week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the event of a ‘no-show’ on the day, the full fee will be charged.
