Event Type

The aim of this event is to develop an understanding of how change affects individuals and teams and to provide tools to support staff through change. It is aimed at supervisors and junior managers within HE libraries and information services who are helping staff through a period of transition or who are experiencing changes in their working lives.

Learning outcomes:
1 Explore different type of change and their drivers
2 Understand the problems that change can cause for both individuals and teams
3 Develop strategies for minimising anxiety, resistance and loss of morale
4 Examine positive aspects of change; how to motivate and successfully implement change.
5 Learn how and when to consult, involve and negotiate and when not to
6 Ensure that the changed service/behaviour continues to be adopted

Outline programme

Morning:
9.30am: Registration

10.00 – 12.30: Ash Charlton will lead a workshop which will focus in particular on areas 1, 2, 3 and 5 above: to develop an understanding of how change affects individuals and teams and to provide tools to support staff through change.

12.30 – 1.30: Lunch

Afternoon:
1.30 – 2.30: three brief case studies of change, from speakers within HE. Each speaker will outline and comment on change in their workplace:

• Developing a roving service. Karen Belsham, Kingston University

• Innovation with space. Ken Dick, Central St Martins, University of the Arts London

• The role of staff development and training in a time of change and transition. Judith Preece, University of East London

2.30 – 2.45: Tea/Coffee

2.45 – 3.30: Participants to choose in advance a discussion group from the three on offer.

• How to take change forward: following initial change and development, how do we keep the change on track and not fall back on the “old ways of doing things” and status quo. Discussion and exchange of experiences. Facilitator: Karen Ellis-Rees

• How is your organisation changing? What are the drivers of change in your organisation? How to identify the key policies, strategies and stakeholders in organisational change. Discussion and exchange of experiences. Facilitator: Ken Dick

• Working with people during change: how to supervise people during a time of change: good practice in communicating, supervising, supporting, problem-solving, and team-working. Discussion and exchange of experience. Facilitator: Gerry Power

3:30 – 4:00: Feedback from the discussion groups, questions & answers and close.

Cost: £125 for cpd25 members and £155 for other institutions.

Cancellations less than one week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the event of a ‘no-show’ on the day, the full fee will be charged.
