The position of Subject Librarian – or Liaison Librarian, or Information Specialist, or any number of other variations – remains a key one in most academic libraries and is one that many new professionals aspire towards. However, in recent years, the nature of the role has changed considerably, with a number of libraries adopting a more ‘functional’ structure, and a few dispensing with the position altogether. At the same time, building relationships and links with academic colleagues in order to ensure that the library’s services and resources best support the university’s teaching and research is as important as it has ever been.

Pete Williams, who manages a team of Subject Librarians at Birkbeck (and previously was one, at two different institutions) will present a survey of current trends in academic liaison, offer some thoughts about how these positions may continue to evolve in the coming years, and give a few pointers about skills that employers might be looking for. Samantha Halford, who is now a Research Librarian at City, University of London, will talk about her new position and how this differs from her previous, more subject-based role.

We hope that this workshop will appeal both to people thinking of applying for subject librarian positions in the future as well as those already working in academic liaison roles.

As part of the cpd25 Aspects programme, this workshop is aimed at library staff looking to acquire additional skills and knowledge or staff working towards Chartership.
