Employment Law In A Nutshell – A One-day Course For HE Managers [Event Ref. No. TG2/EMPLW]

As a line manager, working in a library, do you ever wish you knew more about employment law? Would you like to be more confident in addressing any contractual issues that might arise with part-time staff or fixed- term staff? How about issues concerning maternity leave or flexible working?

If you would like to learn a little more about the law relating to these matters then this interactive workshop could be for you.

The workshop will be given by Philip Lott. Philip is a specialist and practitioner in Employment Law. His ‘day job’ is as Senior Solicitor to a major teachers’ and lecturers’ union – the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL). His background is in local government and he has spent three years as a full-time legal adviser to a University.

In recent years, he has designed and presented many lively and informative courses and training events for managers and HR staff in Further and Higher Education. Participants find his interactive and energetic approach both enjoyable and effective. His clients include: UCEA (the Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association), the UPA (the Universities Personnel Association) as well as many individual old and new Universities.

The seminar will include studies on:

Morning Session:
o Individual employment rights
o Dealing with misconduct/dismissals
o Handling disciplinary meetings
o Giving warnings
o Settling disputes
o Industrial action
o Bullying at work/stress claims
o Dealing with intermittent/long term illness
o Contracts and collective agreements

Afternoon Session:
o Equal Opportunities – who is protected?
o Appointments/interviews
o The rights of part-time staff
o Complaints of harassment
o Requests for part-time/flexible working
o Termination/non-renewal of fixed-term contracts
o The rules on age discrimination/compulsory retirement
o Religion and belief discrimination
o The rights of disabled employees

By the end of the workshop participants will:
• Have gained a practical understanding of the legal principles which govern everyday work and staff-management issues.
• Be able to identify when further advice should be sought.

PROGRAMME:

9.30am: Arrival & welcome

9.45am: Employment Law Quiz/Workshop
A light-hearted and inter-active introduction to the key issues and principles of which Managers need to be aware. We will look at case studies on:
o Dealing with misconduct/dismissals
o Individuals’ employment rights
o Handling disciplinary meetings
o Giving warnings
o Settling disputes

11.00am: Break (tea, coffee and biscuits)

11.15am Continuing our examination of real-life issues, we will consider
o Industrial action
o Bullying at work/stress claims
o Dealing with intermittent/long term illness
o Contracts/variations to contracts and collective agreements

12.00pm: Individual Employment Rights
To reinforce the knowledge gained from the case studies, an easily-accessible overview of all the main employment rights, from unfair dismissal and redundancy rights, to health and safety and time off entitlements.

1.00pm: Lunch Break

1.45pm: Equal Opportunities Quiz/Workshop
To ease us into an afternoon devoted to understanding the essentials of equal opportunities law, we will discuss practical scenarios dealing with:
o Equal opportunities – who is protected?
o Appointments/interviews
o The rights of part-time staff
o Complaints of harassment
o Requests for part-time/flexible working

3.00pm: Break (tea, coffee and biscuits)

3.15pm: Continuing our examination of real-life issues, we will consider:
o The termination/non-renewal of fixed-term contracts
o Age discrimination and compulsory retirement
o Religion and belief discrimination
o The rights of disabled employees

3.30pm: The Law on Equal Opportunities
Again, to reinforce the knowledge gained from the case studies, a concise and pragmatic guide to the law (and practice) on all the main branches of discrimination protection.

4:15pm: Summary and Questions.

Cancellations less than one week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the event of a ‘no-show’ on the day, the full fee will be charged.
