Morning 10.15-13.00: How students learn
Afternoon 13.45-16.30: Group teaching

Tutor: Gwyneth Price, Student Services Librarian, Institute of Education, University of London

These sessions are aimed at:
o Those new to teaching and the support of learning
o The more experienced who would like to review their practice.

Either or both sessions may be attended; it is strongly recommended that those new to theory include the morning session.

How students/adults learn
o Experiential learning
o The learning cycle
o Learning approaches and styles
o Situated learning
o Implications for face-to-face and e-learning
o Formulating learning objectives and outcomes.
By the end of the session participants will be able to apply an understanding of learning theories to their approaches to teaching, choose appropriate teaching activities to suit different learning styles and produce achievable learning objectives and outcomes.

Group teaching
o Characteristics of groups
o Considerations for small and large groups
o Considerations for one-off teaching sessions
o Strategies for engaging and interacting with learners
o Face-to-face and e-learning groups.

By the end of the session participants will be able to choose appropriate assessment criteria for long and short courses, apply appropriate teaching strategies to suit group size and needs of students, and utilise their understanding of learning to develop effective teaching events.

Cost for either the morning or afternoon session is £50 for CPD25 members, and £70 for other institutions, including refreshments.

The cost for both sessions is £70 for members and £110 otherwise, and includes lunch and refreshments.

Please note that there are limited places available for this event. Cancellations less than one week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the event of a ‘no-show’ on the day, the full fee will be charged.
