Legal Research Skills
Legal Research Skills Workshop
30th November 2004
University of Surrey
2pm to 5pm
This workshop is introductory in nature, and is aimed at those who are new to legal research, or who would like a refresher course. It is aimed at anyone who is unfamiliar with online legal research tools, particularly those who work on enquiry desks. The session will cover good free resources on the Internet. The session will not cover subscription services such as Lexis or Westlaw. The workshop’s focus will be upon sources and materials for the UK and its devolved jurisdictions. However, we will include some coverage of materials for the European Union and an outline of how to find sources for other jurisdictions. It will be necessary in the course of the workshop to mention some prominent legal publications in print, but the workshop will concentrate on free materials on the Internet.
Participants will have an opportunity to:
Explore good free legal resources on the web with the help of a workbook (browsing and searching)
Retrieve and examine examples of legislation, case reports, and journal articles
Explore some resources on different branches of law, e.g. family, employment, criminal, etc.
Complete exercises from the workbook and get feedback
Exchange ideas with other participants and with the workshop facilitators
The workshop will be interactive and participants will be able to use Internet resources “hands on??? to complete a workbook of tasks.
