Making Libraries More Accessible – supporting the needs of deaf and hearing impaired Library users [Event Ref. No. TG2/ACC]
This workshop offers an opportunity to listen to experts in the deaf and hearing impaired field on how library and information professionals can support this key user group to more easily access library services and collections. Professional issues of compliance to the DDA, Disability Discrimination Act, library best practice and the needs of the deaf and hearing impaired researcher will be addressed and experiences shared.

Biographical information:
Action on Hearing Loss: Founded in 1911, Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID) is the UK’s largest charity taking action on hearing loss. We’re working for a world where hearing loss doesn’t limit or label people, where tinnitus is silenced – and where people value and look after their hearing.
Johanna Taylor joined the Campaigns team at Action on Hearing Loss six years ago. She has worked on a variety of projects including our ‘Loud Music’, ‘Read my Lips’, ‘Equal Treatment’ and ‘Access to Everyday Services’ campaigns.
Carol Elgy is a Community Support Officer and Deputy Information Officer at Action on Hearing Loss. She joined the charity five years ago and initially worked at the Ealing hearing aid support service. She is now leading a new ‘Hear to Meet’ project in Barking and Dagenham in addition to delivering talks and running stands at a range of information events across the South East.
DeafWise: "Jeanette Wright is a lead trainer at DeafWise, a UK wide training company that helps organisations engage better with deaf people. DeafWise deliver a practical approach through workshops and consultancy to improve the understanding, confidence and skills teams need when it comes to communicating with deaf people."
Victoria Curtis: "As a student who is also an avid user of library resources since 2006, Victoria has experienced a wide range of different libraries from various public to college and universities. She was born deaf and has experienced a great deal of obstacles, which has helped her understand ways she can help others to grasp the needs of people like herself or whose primary language is sign language. She is always happy to provide suggestions or ideas to people who ask her, which is quite often, this includes business people and MPs. The last 2 presentations she gave were at universities and the Houses of Parliament. She is a writer and is currently in the process of having her work edited and so books are a deep passion of hers. She is also an actress and has participated in films including a blockbuster film soon to be released after Christmas starring Hugh Jackman. Victoria has also recently performed at the Royal and Derngate Theatre in Northampton. Helping people with disabilities is a big part of her life and if giving any information may benefit the services and the community then she is more than happy to help"
