Staff Development Officers Discussion Forum 1
Staff Development Officers Discussion Forum I
Staff induction training programmes – getting the balance right
Tuesday 17th March 2009: 1.00pm – 4.15pm
Lee Centre for Manuscript and Book Studies, Senate House Library
Speakers: David Clover (Institute of Commonwealth Studies Library) and Donald Lickley (KCL)
CPD25 is pleased to offer an afternoon discussion forum on staff induction programmes on Tuesday 17th March 2009. The event will begin with lunch and will be followed by two case studies which discuss the staff induction programmes in two very different academic libraries: a small research library and a large converged service. The two speakers will cover the variety of induction training given to library staff during their first three months.
The aim of the afternoon discussion forum is to explore the whole process of creating a staff induction programme which is appropriate both for the institution and the new member of staff. With budgets tight and increased pressure to maximise efficiency in all libraries, the forum will discuss how to get the training balance right. The objectives of the afternoon are to:
• Learn about the staff induction programmes in other libraries.
• Identify some of the key elements which should be included in induction programmes through discussion in breakout sessions, and to explore the ideal timing of these elements during the first three months of a new member of staff.
• To exchange ideas and experience on other important elements which could be included in staff induction programmes.
This afternoon seminar will benefit staff development officers and other staff who are involved with programming staff training.
