Your visit to the Art Collections at Royal Holloway, University of London will begin in what is known as the Victorian Corridor where you can view four impressive copies of Italian Renaissance paintings by the artist, connoisseur, critic and Suffragist, Christiana Herringham (1852–1929). The Picture Gallery itself mainly comprises paintings purchased by Royal Holloway’s founder Thomas Holloway (1880-1883). In 1881 at the age of 81 he embarked on a two-year project to buy an art collection for his new college for women using the fortune he had amassed from manufacturing and selling his ‘cure-all’ pills and ointments. Amongst his most notable purchases are Man proposes, God disposes by Sir Edwin. H. Landseer, The Railway Station by William Powell Frith and The Princes in the Tower by Sir John Everett Millais. Remember to leave a little time to enjoy the sculptures in the North Quad, these include a depiction of the ancient Greek poet Erinna by Henry Stormonth Leifchild (1860) and Queen Victoria executed by the naval officer turned sculptor, Count Gleichen, in about 1883.

The tour will be led by the Curator, Harriet O’Neill, and will include information on the history of the Art Collections as well as current conservation projects.
