Lambeth Palace Library is the historic library and record office of the Archbishops of Canterbury and the principal repository of the documentary history of the Church of England. Its collections have been freely available for research since 1610. Its collection complements that of Lambeth with a key focus on the Church, but a rich diversity of other subject material. cpd25 is pleased to invite you for a tour of these materials.

1400 – Welcome

The Audience Chamber within Morton’s Tower. Built in 1490, Morton’s Tower is the main entrance into Lambeth Palace, and one of the few remaining parts of the original Palace complex. It houses a collection of archives and library materials, as well as offices, our Reprographics Suite, and our Conservation Studio.

1415 – Conservation Studio

Just next door to the Audience Chamber is our Conservation Studio, where we will hear about the establishment of the Conservation Studio and the essential work undertaken by our in-house team.

1440 – The Reading Room

Lambeth Palace Library has been a public library since 1610. Our public reading room will house a display from our Printed Books and Archives collections. Following an introduction to the history of the Library, Printed Books and Archives staff will discuss the material on display and the wider collections held at the Library.

1510 – The Crypt and Lambeth Palace Gardens (weather permitting)

The oldest surviving part of the Palace complex is its 13th century Crypt, whereas Lambeth Palace Gardens have been a private garden since the 12th century, and is the oldest continuously cultivated garden in London. It will also be the site of the new Lambeth Palace Library. A visit to the Crypt and a walk around the gardens will mark the end of our tour.

1540 – Tea in the Audience Chamber

1600 – End of tour
