Visit to Reading University Library Special Collections

A selection of highlights from the rare book collections will be on display for attendees to handle and examine. The University of Reading Special Collections Service, which is housed in a building designed by Alfred Waterhouse, holds over 40 individual collections of rare books – with particular strengths in early science and history books, examples of fine printing, and children’s books. Important collections of rare books include the Overstone Library, a nineteenth-century gentleman’s private library, and the Cole Library covering the history of early medicine and zoology. There will also be an opportunity to view the Special Collections reading room and storage facilities.

Please note that places for this visit are limited.

The Special Collections are based at Redlands Road in the same building and entrance as the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL). Take bus number 9 from the station, stop SK, and get off at Redlands Road. Then walk downhill on Redlands Road, MERL is on the left near the bottom of the hill. The bus is £1.60 single and £3.00 return – Reading buses do not give change.
