The 21st century university library is regarded as a ‘safe place’ and space to ‘feel at home’ for many students. Alongside traditional resources, the library may replicate the comfort of a modern entertainment hub with cafés, big screen areas and comfy seating; but what behaviour is acceptable can be unclear in these varied environments. Frontline staff are also faced with increased demands from students paying a high cost for education.

Drawing on the wide experience of the speakers this workshop will examine approaches to managing student behaviour supportively and collaboratively, while maintaining an appropriate environment for learning and teaching support.

This workshop would be ideal for front-line library staff, library supervisors and student services staff. Attendees will have a chance to network and share best practice with peers and professionals.

During the participative morning workshop Ash Charlton will discuss changing pressures on the student population, and, in the light of these, recommend effective strategies for setting boundaries and challenging difficult behaviour.

1100-1115 – Break

1115-1300 – “Creating Positive Outcomes – Practical Skills” – Ash Charlton, Ace Training

In an enjoyable and interactive session, Ash Charlton will work with the group to agree standards of positive language use, awareness of cultural issues that may affect communication, and make recommendations for challenging unacceptable behaviour.

1300-1345 – Lunch

1350-1405 – Between student and staff: building empathy through 24-hour liaising with the student body Alice Hughes and Carl Gent, Goldsmiths, University of London

1410-1425 – Sign O’ the Times: SU Liaison on a Poster Campaign – Stephen Bowman, South Bank University

Cancellations less than one week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the event of a ‘no-show’ on the day, the full fee will be charged.
