Faced with large numbers of students looking for a place to study and changing styles of teaching that use more group work, libraries need to move away from their traditional design and role and be pro-active in helping readers find study space to suit their needs. This session looks at how some libraries are making these changes.

Programme to follow

Peter Williams and Catherine Lauriol, Birkbeck, will talk about recent changes to study space and group space provision following consultation with students. Birkbeck have introduced Occupeye and Peter will briefly describe how it works.

Richard Collings and Clive Wilson, LSE, will describe their system ‘Fair space for all’, introduced this summer to encourage students to share study space. A refinement of their previous system, flyers are placed on empty desks saying that if the reader does not return to their desk within 30 minutes, someone else may push their possessions aside and use the space.
