Spotting the one in four: the impact and significance of mental illness [Event Ref. No. TG2/SPOT]

One in four people will be affected by mental illness in any year. Come along and explore what the impact of this is for you in your context. What are the signs of psychological distress? How do we know students are in trouble? What should you do and not do? What is an emergency? Where can you get help from?
This workshop would be ideal for any library staff or student services staff who have disability support as part of their remit or are interested in the provision of services and support for users of the library who are disabled. Attendees will have a chance to network and also discuss case studies in small groups giving the chance to have exchange of experiences.
Trainer: Clare Pointon, Psychotherapist, writer and former BBC radio correspondent.
Clare has worked as a psychotherapist and counsellor in both private practice and in a range of settings, including NHS primary and secondary care, with refugees, an alcohol and drug setting, and for the past 10 years in Higher Education at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in Farnham, Surrey, as well as the University of Surrey in Guildford.

Impact and significance of mental health, signs and symptoms of psychological distress and mental ill health and our own reactions to these and pre-existing transferrable skills
1410-1450 – Your role, areas to avoid, a model of engaging and sources of support –
Exploration of when any of this behaviour becomes a cause of concern, areas to avoid, model of engaging and internal and external sources of appropriate support

1510-1535 – Emergencies –
What is an emergency? What to do and what not to do in an emergency and discussion
1535-1550 – Counselling and support –
Counselling and other forms of psychological support in HE and supporting yourself as a non-psychological professional
1550-1645 – Case study and questions –
Case studies in small groups, feedback to group and discussion and questions

Cost:
£70 for members and £105 for other institutions.
Cancellations less than one week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the event of a ‘no-show’ on the day, the full fee will be charged.
