Teaching Excellence Framework – what’s it all about and how will it affect libraries? [Ref. TG2/TExF]

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) was introduced by the Government in 2016 to recognise and reward excellent learning and teaching, and will be implemented by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). It will measure undergraduate education at present but postgraduate education is likely to be included and measured in future years. It will be an annual exercise and will affect both reputation and finances – TEF outcomes will inevitably be used by prospective students deciding where and what to study; and a university’s ability to raise student fees (in line with inflation) will be directly linked to its TEF award (Gold, Silver and Bronze). A statement of findings from the assessors will be published in conjunction with the award. Participation in the TEF is not obligatory, and in order to be eligible for TEF, institutions need to have an approved access agreement and a judgement of satisfactory teaching quality.
The first TEF results were published in June 2017 which was considered to be a “trial year” and the distribution was 26% Gold, 50% Silver and 24% Bronze.
At this event, we will have talks from speakers about the TEF aims and implementation and how it will be affecting academic institutions. There will be a chance for an exchange of experience session and a panel discussion at the end where the speakers can answer questions as well.
This session will be useful for library and information staff who want to find out about the TEF and how they and their institution will be affected by it.
