We are pleased to offer a cpd25 seminar on meeting students’ expectations. Four speakers have been invited to describe how their institutions are responding to changes in users’ expectations and how they are meeting users’ needs. They will talk about their experiences in this area and take your questions.

Topics being addressed will include:
• Extended opening hours
• Changing use of services and buildings
• Creating a new library based on readers’ consultation.

Speakers:

Liz Annetts
Assistant Director, User Services and Staff Development
Brunel University

Liz will give a presentation on extending opening hours at Brunel University Library.
Liz has worked for short periods in industry and public libraries and is a fairly newcomer to HE. Most of her work has been in FE colleges where Liz has gained a wide and varied experience ranging from libraries and learning centres to managing curriculum and teaching. Liz was involved in new building projects at 3 different colleges. The experience was very useful when she moved to Brunel, as the library was undergoing a new extension which was completed in September 2004.
Her current role at Brunel includes customer services, staff training and development, and managing the building. Brunel library opened 24/7 for the first time during the exam period in 2006 and will be open to 1 am for 6 weeks this year before and during the exam period.

Penny Burden
Head of Skills and Personal Development
University of Surrey

Penny will report on the opening of SPLASH (Student Personal Learning and Study Hub), a new student-centre resource area within the University Library.
Penny’s role as Head of Skills and Personal Development is to lead a team which works in partnership with others across the University to promote innovation approaches to student skills development. Her main role at the present time is establishing SPLASH and integrating other parts of University provision within this, particularly Personal Development Planning processes across the University. Penny is involved in many other projects which support students on campus as well as those on Professional Training Year placements.

Katherine Melling
Social Sciences Deputy Librarian
Oxford University

Katherine joined Oxford University Library Services in 2004 from UCL Library Services. She is currently on secondment from her post as Subject Consultant (French and Italian) based in the Taylor Institution Library, covering the maternity leave for the Deputy Social Science Librarian.
Katherine will talk about creating a new Social Science Library at Oxford University based on reader consultation.

Stevie Russell
Site Librarian
UCL Human Communication Science Library

Stevie is Site Librarian at the UCL Human Communication Science (HCS) Library, a branch of UCL Library Services that also has a UK role as the National Information Centre for Speech-Language Therapy (NiCeST). It is a small but highly specialised library, serving the academic and clinical communities in the filed of speech and language science. The 19th century, listed hospital building which houses the HCS department and library is currently undergoing a major refurbishment. Stevie has been involved in the design of a brand new library, and has planned the move to temporary premises while the work is being done.
