The Equality Act 2010 applies to everyone who provides a service to the public, covering statutory, private, voluntary and community sector organisations. Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. This event looks at some of the implications of the act  for the library & information sector.

In this session we will hear from The British Library’s Disability Support Worker, Jason Murray, who will focus on the practical challenges of providing support to allow access for all and information on what equipment is used at the BL and adjustments made in the past.

Ben Watson, Accessible Information Adviser at the University of Kent, will discuss driving inclusiveness across the university to enable wider adoption of assistive technology through the Opportunity, Productivity, Engagement, Reducing Barriers, and Achievement (OPERA) Project as well as outlining the vital role libraries play in delivering an accessible learning experience for all.

We also welcome Dr. Kit Heyam, who will provide a conversational, non-judgemental space to increase confidence and familiarity around trans issues, and to learn how to create a positive experience for trans library users. Covering the basics of trans identities and related terminology alongside practical aspects of trans inclusivity in libraries; including front line social interactions, safeguarding trans users’ confidentiality, and signalling that your library is a trans-friendly space.

Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and discuss problems specific to their area of work, and there will also be an opportunity to ask anonymous questions.
