So You Want to Know About Open Access [TG2/ACCESS]
This online event will provide attendees with an introduction to open access, with the aim of demystifying the concepts and jargon associated with it. Information will be provided on funding models, the reasons for open access, locating sources, and publishing open access material. The session is aimed at those new to the subject and those who would benefit from a refresher after, perhaps, being bamboozled by the complexity of the fast-changing open access publishing landscape but were too afraid to ask!
You will get the opportunity to ask questions of our four expert speakers.
Programme:
10.00 – 10.05: Welcome and introductions – Leila Kassir / Michael Stringer
10.05 – 10.35: Introduction to OA – Christine Daoutis: ‘The why, what and how of Open Access’
10.35 – 11.05: Where to find reputable OA sources – Adam Hill: ‘Where to find reputable OA sources’
11.05 – 11.15: Refreshment break

Speakers:
Christine Daoutis: I co-lead the Open Research team at the University of Surrey. The Open Research team offers services, advice and training on Open Access, copyright, research data management, and research metrics. I work with others across the University (including the Doctoral College, the Academic Lead Research Culture and Integrity, the Research and Innovation office and the IP office) to shape the direction of Open Research at the University through strategic planning, policy and practice.
I also have responsibility for the Open Access and copyright/licensing elements of Open Research. Along with the Faculty Engagement librarians, I design and deliver communications and training related to Open Access to publications and theses and related rights issues. I also advise on copyright for research, learning and teaching.
I have a special interest in making Open Research part of research literacy for researchers, teaching staff and students. I am particularly proud of the Open Research online module I created as part of a plan to increase awareness of open practices.
As of 15 August, I will also work as a copyright support officer at UCL, on a part-time basis; a role I am very keen to begin!
Adam Hill: As the Faculty Librarian for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Surrey I am a primary contact for all Library communications and support between the Library and the Faculty including advocacy of the latest developments in Open Research to research staff and students.
I have responsibility for the Engineering and Physical Science Library collections and provide training for Research staff, ECR’s and PGRs to help them understand their information landscape, providing them with the necessary skills to enable them to find and use reputable sources of information, and to manage and present their research, including use of both Subscription and Open Access tools and resources.
Dr Emma Gallon is Books Manager at the University of London Press, a predominantly open access publisher of humanities research. She has almost 12 years of experience in academic publishing having worked in commissioning and editorial roles at Ashgate Publishing, Routledge and Epigeum/Oxford University Press before joining UoL Press. Her particular interests include open access publishing in the humanities and open research.
Megan Garry-Evans has worked in academic journal publishing for 6 years. She has experience working across open access, hybrid and subscription journals for Nature, Palgrave Macmillan and now the University of London Press.
