So you want to be a librarian? [TG1/LIS]
Are you interested in becoming an information professional or librarian? We will look at the advantage of getting qualified but also explore whether it’s “worth it”. During this two hour online workshop, you will get a chance to ask questions of recently qualified professionals and current LIS students. This event is aimed predominantly at those working in libraries who are interested in gaining formal qualifications.

Speaker biographies:
Sue David: Having completed my Masters in Librarianship at Sheffield University in 1992 I had my first professional role at King’s College London before moving on to a subject librarian role at St George’s University of London in 1996 and I am still there! St George’s has been a fantastically flexible employer and after some great development opportunities I am now the Associate Director of Information Services (Library) and have a team of 20 FTE in our highly specialised library. Over the years I have taken on a variety of roles in our sector – member of chartership board, chair of the Health & Social Care Strategy Group, member of M25 steering group, member and chair of University of London Federal Libraries group – to name a few. Within my institution my role has taken me outside the library and I have had the opportunity to work with colleagues on our Athena Swan steering group and heading up the professional services stream, managing our Asymptomatic Test Centre during Covid, training as a mentor and coach to support colleagues involved in the Aurora leadership programme and more widely across the institution.
Clare Williams is an Information Assistant at the University of Wolverhampton. She holds a BA (Hons) in English and started working in Derby’s public library service as a student, before moving in to academic libraries where she has worked since 2016. She has recently started the MA Library and Information Services Management at the University of Sheffield, with the aim of career progression.
Rachel Brett is Science Reference Team Leader at the British Library. She holds a BA (Hons) in Art History and started working as a Library Assistant at the British Library when she was studying for her MA in Philosophy. Rachel has worked with the Manuscripts and Archives and the Humanities Collections. In 2018 she completed Chartership and took a temporary role in a Public Library to expand her knowledge of the library sector.

Alice Siegwart is a Library Support Adviser at Anglia Ruskin University. She holds a BA (Hons) in Educations Studies and started a career in libraries in 2018. Alice had previously applied to a Library and Information Services Postgraduate course but decided not to pursue it. Instead, she has done several online courses, such as Introductions to Metadata and Digital Preservation and Copyright for Librarians, to increase her knowledge and skills.
Madeleine Ahern: I completed my MLIS degree at UCL this past summer and am now a postgrad at the University of Toronto studying Medieval Art and manuscripts as well as the History of the Book. I hope to pursue a career in special collections and/or art librarianship.
Tom Mason is currently completing his MSc in Information Science at City University and is due to submit his dissertation on the 7 January.

Cancellations less than one week before the event will be charged a 50% cancellation fee. In the event of a ‘no-show’ on the day, the full fee will be charged.
