This workshop is part of the cpd25 Aspects programme, aimed at library staff looking to acquire additional skills and knowledge or staff working towards Chartership.

Join our annual Director’s Cut event where you get the chance to learn the career journey of one of our library directors. You can learn something about what it takes to get into senior management in libraries. With this event, we hope to inspire those who wouldn’t normally see themselves as a leader in our profession.

In this session, Masud Khokhar will take the attendees on a personal leadership development journey. Masud will talk about how libraries run in his DNA and the difficult move from a computer science career to libraries. He will take the audience through his accidental career journey in libraries, starting as a library assistant to becoming the first ethnic minority Russell Group Director of a library service, all within the span of 10 years. Masud will also talk about the challenges he faced, the leadership lessons he learned, the skills he developed to progress, and the navigation tactics he used to convert difficulties into opportunities. Masud will also talk about his radical candour approach towards work, the struggle with imposter syndrome, the process for being an institutional and sectoral leader, and finally, how he approached the development of a bold and ambitious vision for libraries at the University of Leeds. Attendees will not only learn about the career path Masud took, but also the process that is involved in developing a strategic vision for libraries.

Speaker:

Masud Khokhar is the University Librarian and Keeper of the Brotherton Collection at the University of Leeds. A computer scientist by education, and with libraries in his DNA, Masud is passionate about digital leadership and innovation in the changing library and archive environments. His core interests include strategic development, digital transformation, open research, and inclusive leadership. Masud is also the Vice-Chair of Research Libraries UK (RLUK) and a firm supporter of diversity embedded in our thinking and practice within libraries and collections.
